the history of the house

THE HOTEL IS ONE OF THE OLDEST IN MEISSEN

Since its emergence during the reign of Johann Georg II. the house has been pleased with the arrival of a lot of guests. The first documentary evidence of the house brings us back to the year of 1657, when the end of the 30-years-war (1618-1648) marked the beginning of a social and economic recovery. The fact that there was a post station included in the “Goldene Löwe” proves that the hotel has always been a central point in the town of Meißen.

In 1953 the East-German institution “Konsumgenossenschaft” purchased the building, which then disposed of 38 beds in 20 rooms. The conveniences back then (a single toilet in the house, no heating in the rooms and no running water) of course cannot stand up to today’s comfort, but in those times a room was only 3,50 Mark per night. During the years of 1973 and 1974 the house was completely reconstructed, which led to the reduction of the number of beds and to the raise of the prices (10-15 Marks for a room/night).

At the same time the “Löwenklause”, the “Kaendler-Salon” and the “Meißner-Salon” came into being. Now it was possible to welcome groups of travellers in the hall and the fast food restaurant offered the possibility to have a little rest. Twenty years later it was obvious for everybody that a complete reconstruction was necessary in order to save the house.

This reconstruction is documented on the photos in the entrance area of our hotel. Everybody who has a glimpse on them will recognise the expenditure of work that was necessary to create today’s standard. The original building of the “Goldene Löwe” has been extended by including a house on the “Kleinmarkt”, so that the hotel now disposes of 36 rooms. The ground plan of every room is different with the effect that every room has its own, individual atmosphere with the standard being the most modern. Our hotel also has a conference room with space for 45 people and modern technical equipment.

The elegantly decorated restaurant, the “Zum Löwen” and the beer and wine tavern “Zum Speicher” welcomes everybody warm-heartedly. The light-coloured, wooden furniture of the wine tavern along with the Italian landscape paintings on the walls express the original and warm atmosphere, which is supposed to influence the guests. In our house you will find an excellent combination of history and modern service.

As a conclusion we wish you a comfortable stay at our house. Please feel free to ask our staff for whatever the matter. .
